What makes a home truly well built?

It’s easy to be impressed by beautiful countertops, stylish finishes, and a great floor plan. But some of the most important decisions in a home are hidden behind the walls, and homeowners may not discover mistakes until years after the builder is gone.

In this episode of Not a Licensed Architect, I sit down with filmmaker and consumer advocate George Siegal, creator of Built to Last? Buyer Beware, to talk about what homeowners need to know before building or buying a home.

George has spent years exploring what happens when homes aren’t built to withstand the environments they’re placed in, and why homeowners often discover too late that the people they trusted may not have been looking out for their best interests.

One message kept coming up throughout our conversation:
You are your own best advocate.

We talk about why homeowners need to ask better questions, research the people they hire, understand what they’re paying for, and become active participants in the building process rather than assuming everything is being done correctly.

We also explore the role residential designers can play in that process. Designers are often among the first professionals’ homeowners work with, which gives us an opportunity to do more than create beautiful plans. We can educate our clients, connect them with trusted professionals, help them think beyond what they can see, and advocate for decisions that will serve them for years to come.

Because a beautiful home is wonderful.

But a beautiful home that is thoughtfully designed, responsibly built, and made to last is even better.

In this episode, we talk about:

Whether you’re a residential designer, builder, or homeowner planning your dream home, this conversation will make you think differently about what it really means to build well.

Because the quality of a home isn’t determined only by what you can see.

It’s determined by the decisions made long before the drywall goes up.
